Group Coaching vs. 1-on-1 Mentorship: Which One Is Right for Your Mortgage Career?

This is one of the most common questions I get from agents who are ready to invest in their development: should I join a group coaching program, or should I get private mentorship?

The honest answer: it depends on where you are in your career, what you need most, and what kind of learner you are. Both formats can accelerate a mortgage career dramatically. But they do different things, and the wrong fit means you don't get the full benefit of either.

Let me break both down clearly so you can make the right decision for yourself.

The two formats side by side

What group coaching does well

Group coaching is powerful because it combines structured learning with community. You're not sitting alone trying to figure things out — you're in a cohort of agents who are facing similar challenges, sharing what's working, and learning from each other's mistakes as well as their successes.

The community component is often the most underrated part. Accountability is built into the format. When twenty agents see you commit to an activity goal in a group session, you follow through at a much higher rate than when you make the same commitment to yourself in private.

Group coaching also gives you access to a broader perspective. You hear about markets in different cities, different types of clients, different referral strategies — and you take the pieces that apply to your situation. That cross-pollination of ideas is genuinely valuable.

The limitation of group coaching is that it's general by design. The coach can't build every session around your specific pipeline situation, your specific files, or your specific goals. The content is structured to serve the group, which means some sessions will be more relevant to you than others.

What 1-on-1 mentorship does well

Private mentorship is the format that produces the fastest results for agents who are ready to use it. Because the entire relationship is focused on you — your numbers, your challenges, your goals — there's no averaging of needs. Every conversation is directly actionable.

The most valuable part of private mentorship is often the things you don't know to ask about. A mentor who knows your business can see what you can't see from inside it. That outside perspective — from someone who's been where you want to go — is genuinely irreplaceable. I learned more from one year of mentorship than from five years of trying to figure it out alone.

Private mentorship also includes real-deal guidance. When you have a complex file — a self-employed borrower with complicated income, a private lending situation that needs structuring, a commercial deal that requires a different approach — you can bring it to your mentor directly. That's not something a group format can offer.

The limitation is cost and access. Private mentorship at this level is a meaningful investment, and not every agent is ready to extract maximum value from it. If you're in your first three months and don't have much to work with yet, you might not have enough in play to make the most of the 1-on-1 time.

Ready to invest in your career?

Both programs are available now. Group Coaching starts at $500/month. Private Mentorship starts at $999/month. The right choice depends on your stage — but both will move your career forward.

Group Coaching — $500/mo Private Mentorship — $999/mo

Can you do both?

Yes — and some of our most successful agents do. They use group coaching for the community, structure, and regular accountability, and layer private mentorship on top for the deal-specific guidance and personalized strategy.

That combination is particularly powerful for agents who are in a growth phase — doing $30M–$50M and targeting $80M or more. The group gives them community and consistency; the private sessions give them the specific guidance to navigate their particular growth challenges.

The real question

The real question isn't "group or private" — it's "am I investing in my career at all?" The agents who stand still in this industry are the ones who treat their education as over once licensing is done. The ones who build extraordinary careers are the ones who keep investing in their development regardless of how good they're already doing.

Whatever format you choose, the commitment to keep learning — even when things are going well, especially when things are going well — is what separates the agents at the top from the ones who plateau.

A note on timing: The best time to engage a coach or mentor is when you have enough in play to apply the guidance, but before the habits that are limiting you have become entrenched. If you've been in the industry 6 months or more, you're probably at that point.
